Why grading decides the price
Nickel and molybdenum drive stainless value. Mixing 316 into 304 loses the molybdenum premium; mixing 202 into 304 pulls the lot down to the 202 price. A magnet separates 400-series, but only a spot test or XRF reliably separates 304 from 202 – which is why we test in front of the seller.
Typical lots we handle
Dairy and beverage plant upgrades, pharmaceutical line replacements, sugar mills and distilleries, hotel and hospital kitchens, and fabrication shops. These lots often include mild steel supports, gaskets and insulation – removing them before sale avoids deductions.
Preparation checklist
- Use purchase records and drawings to identify grades.
- Separate solids from turnings; keep turnings dry and oil-free.
- Remove MS brackets, rubber, insulation and process residues.
- Label bags and bins by grade.

Frequently asked questions
How do you tell SS 304 from SS 202?
Both are usually non-magnetic, so a magnet will not separate them. A nickel spot test or XRF analyser shows the difference – 304 has much higher nickel.
Why is SS 316 worth more than SS 304?
SS 316 contains molybdenum and typically more nickel, both valuable alloying elements for stainless melters.
Is magnetic stainless steel worth less?
Strongly magnetic stainless is usually 400-series with little nickel and sells lower. Slight magnetism in 304 can come from cold working.
Do you buy stainless turnings?
Yes, provided they are dry, oil-free and not mixed with carbon steel.
